My wife and I searched all over the country to find a training facility dedicated to training diabetic service dogs. I needed assistance with the management of my Type one diabetes. After 47 years with the disease I could no longer identify with the symptoms associated with high and low blood sugars. I had several near death hypoglycemic episodes when I was home alone. It was clear I needed assistance. Several facilities providing diabetic alert dogs were found but they had one to two year waiting periods requiring training at their facilities located across the country. Some provided diabetic alert service dogs but on a very limited regional basis.
We were fortunate enough to find Ron Pace's Canyon Crest K-9 Training Center and his Dogabetics program. The initial interview with Ron took place in September 2009 and we began diabetic service dog training with our new Golden Retriever, Kyan on September 21st.
As of June 2010 Kyans obedience skills and his blood sugar alerting capabilities are increasing. He is performing well. Because of Ron Pace's Dogabetics program, Kyan is now alerting me to high and low blood sugars most of the time. I am now able to stay home alone without the constant fear of experiencing another severe hypoglycemic episode. Thanks Ron and Kyan for helping our family.
