Hayden & Ace
On March 9, 2006, our son Hayden who had just turned 7 was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. In 4 days at the hospital, we passed our carb counting lessons, meal planning sessions, shot tutorials and grief counseling and thought we were ready to deal with this disease. For 4 years we chased one high after a low, followed by another high. Always seeming to be chasing, but never truly controlling his disease in an effective way. Feeling like we could do better, we starting looking at other options to help us fight this daily battle.
After searching the internet high and low for alternatives and new options, I found Ron's website for Dogabetics. I had researched and spoken with, even applied to several other programs but none sounded as complete as Ron's. Little did I know, our journey was just beginning.
After meeting Ron in person, we never looked back. Ron has such a calm, peaceful way not only with the dogs, but with my son and all of us. Our whole family has benefited from Ron's knowledge of life. Hayden clicked right away with the training and looked so forward to our training sessions. We live in Portland, Oregon and often traveled to Tacoma (7 1/2 hour roundtrip) for training 2-3 times a week. We credit Ron not only with teaching Hayden to train, handle and care for a diabetic alert dog, but also with helping him understand his disease better, both emotionally and physically. Ron was an angel for us when we needed it most with Hayden. Being a kid with diabetes is difficult, training and handling a diabetic alert dog 24/7 can be difficult. Ron was there with us for all of it.
Hayden is not resentful about his diabetes. He often says Ace is the best thing that ever happened to him. And he always follows that up with...
and Uncle Ron is the second best thing that ever happened to me.
