I guess you must know a little about me first to really understand what my Diabetic Alert Dog (DAD) Tucker has done for me. First of all Tucker is my Medical Alert Dog. His vest proudly displays a “Medical Alert Dog” emblem and that is his job. Tucker alerts me of both high and low blood sugars. I purchased him from Dogabetics and Ron Pace taught me how to train obedience, public access and how to alert me of when my blood sugars drop to 80 mg/dl or lower and 180 mg/dl and above. Tucker does this precisely and accurately often warning me much sooner (15-20 mins faster) than my blood glucose meter detects a high or low. His “trend” alerts, “Mom, your blood sugar is rapidly rising or falling quickly” have helped me to take a corrective action sooner to prevent further complications of the disease but also to move my scale from the 80-180 mark to the 90-160 g/dl area. Diabetes care is very personalized and Tucker has allowed me to personalize my care to what works best for me. My glucose rises and falls very quickly and sharply even compared to most other diabetics so it is critical for me to know sooner than I am falling so I can correct and prevent an extremely low blood sugar. Before Tucker, I had been in a minor auto accident with my child because my blood sugar was very low on a long drive and affected my vision. He alerts me when I am driving now. Before Tuckers alerts I was hospitalized for blood sugars that may of killed others, (sometimes approaching 900) but have never been near a hospital for blood sugar related issues since my yellow lab has entered my life. Tucker has earned a special place in my heart as my Medical Alert Dog consistently working to ensure I am healthy as can be.
